My kids and I love to camp. And by love to camp, I mean that we REALLY love to camp. We try to head out at least four or five times a Summer, and we have tons of fun no matter where we end up going. But it can be tricky to prepare meals for a family of kids when all you have to work with is a fire and a small pan. Fortunately, it can be done. Check out these campfire cooking recipes and tips below! They’ll change your camping experience. For the better.
Obviously, the key to creating delicious campfire foods is to build the right kind of fire, first and foremost. You’ll need one that is the right temperature, and sometimes, even the right amount of hot coals can be pretty crucial. And the way you lay the wood is just as important. Instead of building a fire in the traditional teepee method, arrange the wood into a V shape so that it sits like a “hunter’s fire.” That way, it’s easier to keep your pan a little more sturdy as it cooks over the fire. And of course, don’t even think about putting said pan on the fire until you have enough coals.
Cooking the right kind of food is important, too. You won’t want to cook food items that have a high-fat content. Because as the fat and grease become hot, it can melt off into the fire and cause some pretty uncomfortable flare-ups. And no one wants that!
Chopped ham or bacon (optional)
Shredded Cheddar cheese
Chopped tomato or other veggies
Salsa (for topping)
Step One: Crack the eggs into a large freezer bag, pressing out most of the air and then sealing. Once sealed, shake the bag to beat the eggs. Once scrambled, open the bag again and pour your desired veggies or toppings into the bag. Reseal.
Step Two: Place the sandwich bags full of eggs into a pot of water boiling over the fire. You can cook up to eight bags at a time!
1 Package Refrigerated Pizza Dough
1/4 Cup Pizza Sauce
Step One: Place your pizza stone directly onto a log in the fire to heat up. While it is heating, roll out your pizza dough to your desired thickness. Place on the stone and let cook for 10 minutes, flipping and repeating on the other side.
Step Two: Remove the dough from the fire and put the sauce and other toppings on the pizza. Put it back into the fire until the cheese melts, about another ten minutes more. Imagine how delicious something like this would taste cooked over the fire!
1/2 Pound Bacon
1 Pound Ground Beef
1 Onion, chopped
2 Cans of Baked Beans with Pork
1/3 cup barbecue sauce
1 package refrigerated biscuit dough
Step One: Cook the bacon in a dutch oven skillet until browned and full cooked. Remove and set aside, later cutting it into bite sized pieces. Add hamburger and onion to the skillet, cooking the two until the meat is no longer pink.
Step Two: Add the bacon, baked beans, and barbecue sauce to the hamburger and onion mixture. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, adding a layer of biscuits to the top of the mixture in the skillet. Cover, and simmer, allowing the biscuits to cook for ten minutes before serving.
