Dress Up Your Porch With a DIY Doormat

Dress Up Your Porch With a DIY Doormat

Door mats are a dime a dozen these days. You can find cute prints all across town. But what you can’t find are obscure last names like “Rastovski” or “Dueschman” (yep, those are real names) on a door mat from the store.

Sure you could order a custom door mat off of Etsy from a dozen different shops, but you’d end up spending a pretty penny. Instead, follow a few simple steps and you can make your own adorable doormat that says anything you want it to.

1. Purchase a blank door mat like this one from Amazon.

You’ll need these items as well:

1.Stenciling Paper – poster board would work for this project but will only give you one or two sprays.

2.Sharpie

3.Exacto Knife

4.Sewing Pin

5. Spray Paint

Optional: You can print free stencils from a number of websites online. This one lets you make your own stencil using a small selection of pre-set fonts. Or you can use pre made stencils like this one..

Holidays, names, quotes, or a simple “Welcome” are all possible. Once you’ve found your stencil, you’re ready to make your door mat!

Step 1. Create your stencil by transferring the image to your poster board. Place the printed template on top of the poster board, image facing upward. Using your sewing pin, poke holes along the outline of your image. Remove the template from the poster board and set to the side. Using your sharpie, re create the outline of your template you just created on your poster board by connecting the dots. Once you’ve successfully recreated the image on your template, cut out your stencil using the exact-o knife.

It is important not to over-cut your lines. Paint can bleed through small cuts in your stencil.

Step 2. Secure your stencil to the door mat.

Step 3. Spray your chosen colored spray paint. Follow the directions on the product label.

Step 4. Remove the stencil and allow the paint to dry fully.

Once the paint is fully dried, you can place the mat outside your door! It really is that simple! Have fun with it.
