Potpourri Recipes For Fall

Fall is my favorite season. I’ve found a way to capture the scents of the outdoors and bring it inside with these DIY potpourri recipes for fall.

1. My Favorite Potpourri Recipe

1 apple cut in fourths

1 lemon cut in fourths

2 or 3 cinnamon sticks

1 orange cut in fourths

Water to cover

Place in a pan and simmer.

2. Winter Potpourri

1 cara cara orange (or blood orange)

1 valencia or navel orange

1-2 vanilla bean pods

3-5 cinnamon sticks

4-5 cups of apple cider

1 small branch of fresh pine

Pour apple cider into pot, add cinnamon sticks and sprigs of pine. Open vanilla bean pod (lengthwise) and place in pot. Cut citrus into half inch slices and place in pot. Reach a gentle boil then simmer for several hours.  Next, add water or apple cider when liquid evaporates.

3. Simmering Potpourri Bricks

2 tbsp. applesauce

1 oz. of pumpkin pie ground spice

1 oz. of apple pie ground spice

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Dough should be stiff but not dry. Section off dough into small portions; gently shape each portion into 1 1/2 inch rectangles. Place the “Brick” onto a cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining dough (this recipe makes approximately 10 “bricks”). Bake. Preheat oven to 275 degrees and bake for 1 1/2 hours until dry and firm. Cool. Use as a simmering potpourri by simply dropping in boiling water.

4. Lime, Mint and Fresh Pine Potpourri

1 tsp vanilla

2 cinnamon sticks

¼ cup fresh mint

1 lime

1 small branch of fresh pine needles

Place in a pot and simmer.

5. Holiday Spice

2 c. water

1 Tbs. whole cloves

1 c. orange juice

4 cinnamon sticks

1/2 c. sugar

1 c. pineapple juice

1 lemon, sliced

Bring ingredients to a boil and simmer. If liquid gets low, add more water. Refrigerate when not using. Add water and simmer to use again.

6. Williams Sonoma Signature Scent Simmering Potpourri

1 lemon, sliced

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 sprigs of fresh rosemary

Combine ingredients to a small crock pot and fill with water. Next, simmer for hours. For a regular sized crock pot, quadruple the recipe. Double the recipe for a stove top pot or medium sized saucepan. This is one of the most classic potpourri recipes for fall.

7. Cranberry Stove Top Potpourri

Slices of orange

tangerine

clementine or other citrus fruit

Cranberries

Cinnamon sticks

Star of anise

cloves

ginger

Fir branches

Place ingredients in a pot and simmer on low. Add water as liquids evaporate.

8. Holiday Potpourri

1 Orange

1 Cinnamon Stick

1 Bay Leaf

1 Lemon

1/4 Cup Whole Cloves

Cut citrus into pieces. Put all ingredients in a pot or saucepan and cover with water. Simmer on stove, and add water when the liquids run low.  Refrigerate when not using.
