From tiny houses to small apartments, there’s no doubt that small spaces are in! But for how cute they are, how do you actually pull off functioning in a tiny space without compromising comfort or appeal? Here are 13 great ideas to get your designing gears turning.
1. Multipurpose Furniture
If your budget allows, purchase multipurpose furniture. Your appealing sofa by day turns into a comfy cozy bed by night. Also find coffee tables that can double as night stands. Watch this video from IKEA to watch the transformation.
2. Bookcase Divider
If buying a sofa bed isn’t an option, use bookcases and shelving to divide your living area into rooms. Having your bed somewhat hidden may make your space more inviting to guests. Source.
3. Curtains
If you like the idea of hiding your bed away but don’t want to take up space with bulky shelving, consider a curtain system instead. How easy is that?! Idea from Country Living.
4. Bed Nook
I personally prefer the idea of keeping my sleeping space as secluded and cozy as possible. If this is your preference as well, double-dip on ideas by using bookshelves AND curtains to create your own little tucked away bed nook. This tiny 280 square foot apartment in Paris pulls off the bed nook perfectly!
5. Pendant Lamps
Save as much of that precious floor space as you can! Install pendant lamps instead of floor lamps. The lighting is often better anyway! Source.
6. Bar Cart
Bar carts are a great way to create kitchen counters without permanently compromising space. Use them in the kitchen for all your master-chef cooking and then move it out of the way when you need room for other tasks. It can also double as a table when not in use in the kitchen. 7. Desks ↔ Table
Skip on taking up space with a fixed dinner table. Instead, create a table only when needed by pushing two desks together. I love how the benches are used as chairs at the table! Learn more about how to pull this off from Cool Creativity.
8. Hideaway Table
I’m all about the hideaway pieces when they can be achieved with style. This hideaway table drawer does just that! You get the table you need while still maintaining class. Perfect! As seen on Better Homes & Gardens.
9. Storage Ottoman
Storage ottomans might just win the prize for most multi-functional pieces in small spaces. They can double as benches, chairs, shoe/clothing storage, hideaway beds, hideaway tables/desks, and much more. Check out Pinterest for the ottoman that’s just right for your needs.
10. Multipurpose Space
Use the same living space for multiple purposes. Here, the area can be used as both a vanity and and an office space by simply turning on the ottoman. (As a side note, mirrors are great additions for small spaces anyway because they create the illusion of being in a larger room).
11. Matching Paint
Match furniture and wall paint to minimize the feeling of “stuffiness”. Having too many colors can create a less cohesive feeling in your tiny home. Read more here.
12. Heavy Curtains
IKEA suggests installing heavy curtains to keep light out in the mornings. Check out their options here.
13. Projector Screen
We all need a little down time and sometimes watching a movie on your laptop or tablet just isn’t very satisfying. For whatever reason, if owning a TV just isn’t right for your tiny home living situation, look into a projector instead. Check out some of your options here on Amazon.
